Innovative and creative lighting design is at the forefront of our British culture, more and more talented designers are coming to our attention every single day which makes our job as Interior Designers extremely exciting as we literally have a world of possibility at our finger tips.

A key area close to all our hearts is the environment and trying to preserve our beautiful World for future generations to enjoy.

As designers, we are constantly trying to look for inventive ways to re-use discarded, old items, currently banded around as ‘pre-loved’! The current trend of up-cycling, when done well, is astonishing. The ability to turn a mundane, old object into something that will be treasured once again for many years to come is a true talent…an example of recycling at its best.

One of our favourite designers currently is Alex Randall. Alex is a British born lighting designer and artist who has a penchant for the obscure! Forget working with delicate crystals and brightly coloured baubles common to so many lighting designers these days, Alex has pushed the boundaries of the norm using unconventional materials within her designs such as the controversial medium of Taxidermy, rawhides and salvaged materials and in doing so, has created some of the most mythical and theatrical lighting I have ever seen. Granted, it may not be to everyone’s taste but even if it isn’t yours, you have to appreciate the beautiful and surreal nature of each piece. There is nothing sinister or grotesque about her work and all her taxidermy is done with a sympathetic eye to withhold the beauty of the animal and nature itself. Some would even call it a tribute to the grace of the bird or the stealth of the rodent.

Don’t for one minute think that Alex Randall spends her free time plucking birds from their nests, dragging ducks from the water and poisoning rats in their tunnels…she has made the moral stance, to which we applaud her, to only use already dead or humanly culled animals in her lighting designs.

In a fairly short time, Alex has gone from strength to strength in the lighting design industry with her work being recognised and shown in Countries all over the World. Alex has previously exhibited at Lane Crawford – Hong Kong, Ken Fulk – San Francisco and her current installations reside at her boutique in the lobby of the Sanderson Hotel – Oxford Circus, London.

With her own Studio Range, including her first ever award winning lighting design, the Bakelite Telephone Lamp and one of my favourites, the Squirrel wall light, Alex has developed a range perfect for any discerning art lover…especially those with a tendency to want out of the box design!

Now I am off to ponder what genius artwork Alex could create if I sent her my rather naught pygmy goat Woody…although I doubt she would be pleased to arrive at her studio to be met by a rather frisky, very much alive, head butting goat!!

Great Gatsby Inspired Art Deco Interiors

Written in 1925, F Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby is set in the roaring twenties, the decade when interior designers were first used. Their influence made houses much more glamorous, and dream homes were created. Homes became modern and fun as well as extremely sophisticated.

Modernism was taking off and shocking the world with its pared down almost harsh look. In the middle of the decade, Art Deco showcased and became the major new thing, lasting way into the 1930’s. The Art Deco style is characterised by feminine curves and flowing lines, lots of masculine iron work and walls accented my geometric designs. Art Deco used various decorative motifs, notably lightening bolts, wheels, chevrons, fans, sunrays, circles, pyramids and waterfalls.

Art Deco was influenced primarily by speed and movement as technology around high speed transit was rapidly mushrooming, surfaces became polished, sleek and shiny. Curves were replacing rights angles and soft colours such as aqua, pink, peach and the many shades of white were beginning to rule this movement. There is an almost masculine feel to the Art Deco period which also has a romantic air about it.

Along with modernism and Art Deco, early Hollywood, the glamorous and glitzy world of the silver screen also filtered through to interiors. Think cocktail cabinets and crystal decanters!

One of the most definite styles of the era was the use of geometric shapes in everything from fashion to architecture to interior design. Renowned fabric house Zoffany brought out their latest collection of wall coverings, Lexington alongside the release of The Great Gatsby movie. Lexington introduces ‘scatter’ beads (applying fine translucent beads to the surface of the design), creating a luxurious sparkling effect on classic and elegant designs.

The collection features a geometric sunray pattern, a stunning damask of fountains, and a subtle smart graduated stripe, along with Vienna, which is definitely one of our firm favourites in the studio! With a thick mosaic pattern arranged as rows of overlapping colours, this paper reflects the rich façades and tiled interiors of 1920’s buildings. Available in 10 colour ways this paper would provide a stunning dimension to any room scheme! Art Deco is all about symmetry and balance which you can capture using wallpaper like these below……

Or why not use this exquisite bevelled mirror design by Cole and Son recreating a modern twist on the trend for antique glass? Printed on foil, this design comes in 6 subtle reflected shades of aged silvers, rusted bronze, faded blues and amethyst, and would form the perfect paper for a feature wall.

During this decade walls in most rooms were painted in plain and light colours, while ceilings were often painted in high gloss. Teaming whites and off-whites with subtle blues will create this beautiful monotone serene feel. One of Designer’s Guild latest collections, Seraphina plays with muted indigos combined with a sleek oyster colour palette, rich damasks, heavy linens and raw silks. The emphasis is very much 1920’s and the style is clean, simple and very easy to live with.

Bold colours were also used, especially in halls, and virtually always in combination with black. Green was the most used colour, so to recreate the bold stylised look of the jazz age choose a bright and full of life green.

The early Hollywood influence on the twenties is evident in the popularity of shiny, luxurious fabrics like silks and satins. I would advise not using any strong florals when trying to create an Art Deco inspired room. The fabrics in this style are usually either shiny solid colours or geometric designs. Patterned satin or silk cushions with piping and tassels were more the look.

The Cymbeline Velvets collection, also by Zoffany, features velvets layered with silks and linen. Two velvet designs make up this collection, where soft shades, texture, and depth result in an overall style that is both modern and elegant. Designers such as Colefax and Fowler date back to the early 20^th century and many of their fabrics are in twenties design. Lasalle combines a subtle floral motif with a bold geometric pattern, and this luxurious silk fabric would make ideal curtains which are sure to bring the glamour of the 1920’s to any interior.

Furniture consisted of strong, streamlined shapes, and often in single pieces rather than suites. Reflective furniture was all the range in the twenties and this antique mirrored sideboard is a perfect example. This type of furniture creates a real statement piece in a room and similar designs would have been found in the homes of the high society living in this era. Falling in line with the shiny fabrics and reflective surfaces was the popularity of polished metal such as chrome. Adding leather to this finish instantly creates a more masculine chic décor.

Furniture was British born Interior Designer Syrie Maugham’s speciality. French antiques in particular, which she would strip back, paint and glamorize. A trend which we see again and again now a days! The appeal of high gloss furniture evoked a sense of décor glamour and drama into a room.

If the floor didn’t consist of ornate decorative tiles, it would have almost certainly been over laid with a large geometric patterned rug. Why not go for a large circular one as the centre piece to a room?

Nothing has the ability to add more glitz and glam to a room than a few stunning chandeliers, and these unique twenties-inspired versions will cast a glittery glow from wall-to-wall.

Plenty of low key accent lighting such as lamps and wall scones were often used to create a romantic setting. Lamps were often mirrored like the one shown below, to add a real flapper look why not add a tassel fringe to the bottom edge of the shade? To channel the more masculine chic décor, go for a fabulous 1920’s inspired standing movie lamp.

Adding a striking painting or accessories in materials such as tortoiseshell and mother-of-pearl will give touches of opulence, but avoid cluttering. Mirrors were also a big accessory during the Deco period so either big or small, round, jagged or triangular they all make a great contribution to a wall in your room.

The frivolity and glamour of the Roaring Twenties, the era in which The Great Gatsby is set, has been intoxicating, and it is from this vivid setting and the likes of Syrie Maugham and Dorothy Draper that many designers today get their inspiration from. If you are not looking to do a complete redesign of your home, you can still add hints of 20’s-inspired décor with the odd glamorous home furnishing or accessory. I hope this post and products shown show you the beauty of 1920’s design and encourage you to place some twenties style in your home that will pay homage to the Great Gatsby era!

Christian Lacroix – A creative genius…

This spring the new Christian Lacroix Maison collection edited by Designers Guild, takes us to the heart of Al-Andalus, a land of exchange, culture, and fusion.
‘Alcazar, a linen toile printed with small geometric zelliges and Macarena, a brocade inspired bystucco and liturgy create a Sevillian palace in the mind.
Abstract Malachite is the multicolored labyrinth of its stately gardens and Wild Palms the Oriental reminiscence of its secular palm trees.
As dusk veils the gardens in evening, the beauties stroll draped in their shimmering and multicoloured Grenadine striped silks, attracting passing Butterfly Parades, luminous in the dying light.
Later, following a brief escapade to the Souk in search of a crisp silk, they mount the saddle of their Arab Spanish thoroughbred Andaluz destined for the freshness of their Patio, a lovely trompe l’oeil tiled with dazzling Azulejos. Until late in the night, melodies of flamenco guitar dance in the air, as they caress wrapped warmly in their soft and thick Manta tweed’ – Sacha Walckhoff for Maison Christian Lacroix.

2013 seems awash with fabric and wallpaper designs depicting butterflies but non seem quite as flamboyant and vibrant as the Lacroix ‘Madame Butterfly’ design. With an airborne parade of butterflies, from the stylised to the photographic, makes for a stunningly expressive, digitally printed, cotton design fabric with a matching wallpaper. The subtle shadowing offers great depth and movement to the lively scene to create a bold fabric…not for you ‘subtle folk out their!

As well as Madame Butterfly, another studio favourite is the ‘Abstract Malachite’ design. This gorgeous geometric is mimicking the natural design of malachite crystals. Multicoloured and beautiful to behold, a statement on digitally printed cotton. This design is also available on wallpaper and in a stunning rug…perfect to create an ecclectic mix using Christian Lacroix designs.

If you are looking for something REALLY different, have a peek at the ‘Patio’ design on both printed cotton fabric and wallpaper. This design leaves the observer with an impression of a wall of intrigue, with a repeating tiled background interspaced with decorative alcoves, frames and iconography. An inspiring and beautifully detailed design sure to create the perfect feature in any room…we especially love it in bathrooms!

This latest inspired collection by Christian Lacroix also comes complete with a range of upholstery weight fabrics. The ‘Arrugado Andaluz’ is simply stunning with a relaxed feeling natural printed linen featuring a beautiful velvety antiqued provençal design in a range of wonderful summery schemes. Floor Fillers – Rugs

Most people might think rugs are to keep your feet from getting too nippy or perhaps filling a large unbroken expanse of floor, designers on the other hand, look at rugs as another focal point adding texture and colour to a room. Some are statement pieces and require simple modern furniture whilst others are more understated.

Don’t make the mistake in buying a large rug for a smaller room, especially with a large and elaborate pattern as this tends to make the room appear cluttered. The smaller the rug, the more visual space there is which optically enlarges a room. The opposite applies in larger more spacious rooms, which can also take furniture contained on the rug itself. This can frame the area of the room whilst also creating zones.

Ever thought of hanging a rug on the wall? Well apart from the visual textural interest it creates, this idea also helps reduce sound, something that can be a problem with open-plan homes. Mixing traditional with modern, rugs and wall hangings are at home in even the most diverse of interiors…

Which to choose – round or rectangular? As a rule round rugs equal aesthetics and open up a smaller space, while corners signify function. Luke Irwin’s octagonal geometric ‘Cranborne’ rug has the best of both. This crop circle effect would be an elegant yet edgy addition to any smaller room, perhaps a hallway entrance for example.

It’s not an easy decision when choosing a rug! Good rugs aren’t cheap and wrong rugs can ruin a room in a flash of clashing colour, discordant shape or an impractical finish. A good rug will certainly be an excellent investment to any household and if looked after is bound to last for generations. Rugs have been in our homes across the world for thousands of years, and it is obvious they are here to stay!

In my opinion, Tim Walker is one of the greatest modern day photographers. Also known as The Storyteller, Tim manages to create magical images that tell a thousand words.

Tim has worked with all the leading fashion houses such as Mulberry, Dior, Oscar de la Renta, Chanel to name but a few, creating photographic masterpieces that could never be described as ordinary. Walker’s style is so unique that anyone taking an interest in photography can spot his work a mile off. The fairy-tale aspect to Walker’s work is evident for all to see. These pictures are mystical and should be impossible to create yet Tim does so in a manner that seems effortless, as though it is engrained in his psyche. However, notice the sinister twist evident within his fairy-tale inspired images? Does Tim Walker still see the world through a child’s eyes? Concentrating on the mystical yet also seeing the possible monster under the bed?

What is appealing in Tim Walkers creations is his lack of portraits taken within the confines of a studio which is an offering most photographers have as their staple diet. Studio work can be restrained and lifeless, with portrait after portrait churned out. Walker, however, takes it to a whole different level, some might say an unconscious level as what amazing mind can conjure up these exquisite dream (or even sometimes nightmare) inspired images.

Tim Walkers latest book, ‘Story Teller’, available to buy through Amazon or Mulberry, is literally a book of treasure. A fairy-tale inspired picture book purely for adults. This is a book which should take pride of place in every home and I am sure you will all agree, Tim Walker is the greatest photographer who was obviously born to create with the camera.
